Canada's involvement in Afghanistan has steadily increased since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001. Canada entered Afghanistan with the objective to assist in reconstruction effort the war-raveaged country, and to provide some measure of stability and security to the area. Since that time, Canada's mission has significantly changed to actively fighting in and around Kandahar.
Recently the current Canadian goverment annouced plans to stay until 2009. Since this event, the goverment has not provided Canadians with the goals or objectives of this mission. They have appointed a council that will provide reports at the end of 2009, but some say this is simply a way to avoid being forced to answer questions about Canada's current mission for Afghanistan.
Canadians Agaisnt War demands answers from Stephen Harper's goverment to these questions:
What are the goals and objectives of this mission and how do they meet Canada's foreign policy objectives?
What is the realistic mandate of the mission and how is it being enforced?
What are the criteria to measure progress?
What is the definition of success?
And what is the clear exit strategy for this mission?
Also, Canada's active role in fighting in Afghanistan is now defining Canada's identity as an agressor instead of the peacekeeping Canada that Canadians are so proud of. Furthermore, the goverment is spending billions of dollars on a war that we have no answers as to why we are there with no exit strategy. Based on all of these facts, Canadians Against War demands that the Canadian goverment remove our troops from a war with no dfeined objectives and goals.
Canadians Against War believe that Canada'role in Afghanistan is should be focused on humanitarian aid, reconstruction, and a comprehensive peace process - not a George Bush-style counter-insurgency war.
